PPC Scavenger hunt by
on 2017-08-24 04:40:12 UTC
Hello everyone, and welcome to the PPC scavenger hunt! This is a new game, where boarders look for various uncommon to extremely rare things in fanfic (mostly badfic) and then get points for finding them. Whoever has the most points at the end wins.
There are 50 items to find, all of which are worth one point. To enter the game, make a reply to this post title "[your name]'s finds". When you find something, reply to that post, including the item you found in the subject, and quote the part of the fic that you found the item in and link to the fic. You can't use the exact same thing as another boarder, but using something else from the same sentence for the same item on the list.
Also, to keep the scavenger hunt safe for people verifying finds, NSFW or NSFB fics are not allowed. This is probably going to mean T-rated or below fic. To keep things interesting, any items must be found in chapters that were published at on or after 2017-07-23, and anything from any fic that has been PPC'ed is not allowed. The game will run until the end of 2017-09-24, EST (to match the timestamps on the main board).
Now that the rules are out of the way, here are the items to find, all of which I have seen in fic (although not necessarily in eligible fic) :
- A mini with three or more letters added, deleted, or removed
- An object of an impossible color
- A Suvian reformed within their own fic
- A sentence with more SPaG errors than words
- An author's note in the middle of the chapter
- A heading in the form of "[character]'s POV"
- A generic weapon
- An instance of reader bashing
- A pronoun problem between two characters not being shipped
- A nonsensical illness
- An instance of "Canon" misspelled as "cannon"
- A completely unromantic scene intended as romance
- A canonical creature described in a completely wrong manner
- A character with a negative age
- A piece of figurative language that makes more sense when interpreted literally
- A page-long paragraph ("pageagraph")
- An uncanonical character who would be OOC resistant or immune if canon
- A badfic shorter than 500 words
- A soap opera cough
- A character who checks off an excessive number of common Mary Sue traits
- A character who is over 99% OOC but not replaced
- A sentence that ends in a punctuation mark not normally used to end sentences
- A poorly-written poly relationship
- An unclosed parenthesis or similar punctuation mark
- An author's note not marked as such.
- An unintelligible acronym
- An LGBT+ Suvian
- A character who is both bashed and a Suvian's LO in the same fic
- A ship which is obviously a bad idea
- A ridiculously flimsy excuse for two characters falling in twu wuv
- A misuse of mathematics
- A sentence which does not begin with a capital letter
- A summary (including any tags) which implies at least three charges
- A series of three or more of the same punctuation mark
- A comma splice
- An unnecessary line break
- A correctly used semicolon
- Food with an impossible flavor
- A nonsensical object (such as "Long Table Elrond")
- A word misspelled as a different word
- A number used as a word
- A canonically incorrect romantic custom
- A completely generic setting
- A sentence with three or more ambiguous pronouns
- A character that has no reason to appear in prose (^, |, _, etc.)
- An unattributed line of dialogue
- A statement of something obvious
- A character with the same name as the author
- A summary or title with a SPaG error
- A good CAHQ card (Anything extra weird that doesn't fit one of the above items)
Good luck hunters!

"Meanwhile With Dumblebum"
Yes, seriously. The story is marked as "Dumbles bashing" as well (though later on, in this same chapter they call him Dumbledore, so maybe it's on purpose?). By the way, Harry is actually a Malfoy, gets sorted on both Slytherin and "Gryfinndor" (which I think would make a lovely mini-Aragog) and his best friends are Hermione and Draco (who suddenly isn't racist). Let's not go over their powers, though be warned they include something called "Magic Siphoning". Please, please, spork it.

This one's actually only 89 words, so here it is in its entirety:
As Harry sat on his cell in Azkaban he started thinking im going to get revenge on that Weasley bitch and his whore of a wife!
As harry sat on his cell he began practicing wandless majic, occlumency, animegus form and leginimency. After 6 weeks of practice he spotted the girl while invading a guards mind and saw she was Gabrielle Delacor. Once he started practicing his animegus...2 weeks later he became a 10 foot rattle snake. That night he was planning on escaping arounf 1:00...

That's a fairly classic Persona badfic there: Uncanon character joins the fun and still thunder with his 'unique' Persona (like all the canon characters), hitting on canon characters, and questionnable SpaG. This one is 'original' though, because he's a cousin to Persona 1 protagonist.
I originally went to school at St.Merlin high, which was located in the city of Mikage-cho. Apperently there was a big conspiracy with an old company called sebec, and their branch president, Takahisa Kandori. Ever since then, the town had a bad reputation of being haunted by evil spirits, but its just stupid superstition.
But last January, I was told that I would be transferred to a different school and city. A city called, Iwatodi. A city that is runned by the Kirijo group... I think? I have to wonder though, why was I getting transferred to this type of place. "Sigh maybe it was a mistake, or maybe Naoya was worried about me." My cousin, Naoya Toudou is what you would call... a very worried person I would believe. But in the end he's always been there for when I needed some to talk to.
That said, the spelling of St. Hermelin is a bit... off.
Number 18: Fic with less than 500 words. by
on 2017-08-25 09:28:13 UTC
Heck, I can pretty much quote the entire fic.
Yukari Takeba is a curvy, slim and helpful archer from Japan. Her life is going nowhere until she meets Mitsuru Kirijo, a slender, sexy woman with a passion for fighting Shadows Yukari takes an instant disliking to Mitsuru and the cold-blooded and arrogant ways she learnt during her years in Japan. However, when a thug tries to rob Yukari, Mitsuru springs to the rescue. Yukari begins to notices that Mitsuru is actually rather courageous at , the pressures of Mitsuru's job as a heir to the Kirijo group leave her blind to Yukari's affections and Yukari takes up writing to try an distract herself.
Finally, when rude school student, Minato Arisato, threatens to come between them, Mitsuru has to act fast. But will they ever find the passionate love that they deserve?
I'm sure I could squeeze more items out of that...

"The train whistled at station 9 and ¾ths, and I shivered hesitantly as my parents wrapped me up in one final hug."
I'm aware it's relatively minor (only saying you measure things in fourths instead of quarters), but if I find a better one I will replace this with that.
I think that's an Americanism. by

A summary or title with a SPaG error. If we're allowed two from the same 'fic that is.
"Draco Malfoy is returning to Hogwarts to complete his final year. The wizarding world is at peace at the death of Lord Voldemort; however in the Malfoy household, no peace is to be found. Draco found out that he is actually a veela and he needs to find a mate before graduation! Failure to find a mate will result in a catastrophe. Will Draco be able to find his mate?"

And in here I will place things that don't quite qualify:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12153324/1/No-Woman-Am-I is, of all things, a trans!Eowyn character replacement. I've read over the first chapter and 'Dernhelm' is definitely replaced; he says this to Faramir in the Houses of Healing: "Do not mourn [Boromir], then, for he found a glorious death, while you will be slaughtered like a dog. Envy him."
Sadly, the most recent chapter doesn't contain any evidence of Suvianness; he seems to be aiming towards a romance with Lothiriel, who's also gone pretty OOC. But I can't claim a #27 'LGBT+ Suvian' from the last month.
A near miss for #14, 'A character with a negative age':
This is a retelling of Smeagol's fall into Gollum. Here's the entirety of Chapter 3:
I suddenly heard a loud piercing scream which I only assume could be Mrs.Brandybuck. "Deagol! Deagol is dead!" She screamed
Deagol died nowhere near the Shire, so this is impossible. But, sadly for me, he did die about a hundred years after Gorhendad Oldbuck changed his family's name to Brandybuck.

"your kin have been lurking here for days something about black riders" barlim informs her and Mia takes her hood off Her hair is a chestnut brown blonde color and was cut to her shoulders and thin.
'barlim' is Barliman Butterbur, and the common way of creating minis I believe means the lowercase 'b' counts as an error (along with the missing 'an').
#18: A badfic shorter than 500 words by
on 2017-08-25 13:50:26 UTC
It's a poem. It starts out by comparing Legolas to 'a child of Apollo'. It later claims he 'has never touched a beer', which directly contradicts movie canon. It's just... bad.
I really wanted to claim it for #13, A canonical creature described in a completely wrong manner, as well, but figured 'character' and 'creature' were a little too different.
And yet they got the Quenya form of his name right!
#16: A page-long paragraph ("pageagraph") by

I'm gonna go ahead and claim https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12600784/1/Meetings (the prologue). It has a single separated line at the bottom, but... well, I have absolutely no idea what the body of the text says, because I just can't bring myself to focus on it.

#43: A completely generic setting by
on 2017-08-24 09:00:06 UTC
This is a poem, purportedly about the coming of Sauron to Mirkwood. I know that because a) the summary says so, and b) it uses the name 'Necromancer'. Beyond that, I'm pretty sure this is Game of Thrones, not LotR.
No tender lover he, beneath pale moons, His longing, crypt-born, guides the conqueror worm, No soft caresser; caster of the runes, His frozen lich-touch scorches flesh from bone.
#33: A summary (including any tags) which implies at least three charges by

Legolas returns home to Greenwood after the Ring war, and the Fellowship is thrust into the ever so confusing relationship of Legolas and his Childhood friend Ava, but as soon as thing seem to be going the right way some Men from Gondor make terrible some terrible decisions. Threatening everything. Im shit at summaries, please forgive me
1) Altering the timeline; Legolas did not return to Mirkwood after the War, but settled in Ithilien. 2) Also, the Fellowship didn't go with him. 3) Mirkwood was never renamed Greenwood, but became Eryn Lasgalen, 'Wood of the Green Leaves'. 4) 'Ava' is not an Elvish name, nor (in case it comes up) a Mannish one in Middle-earth. 5) Grammar errors all over the place. 6) While they're not necessarily charges, the childhood friend and unidentified Men from Gondor do not bode well.
Edit: The story was updated 22 hours ago, but originally posted in 2013. Does this still count?
#21: A character who is over 99% OOC but not replaced by
on 2017-08-24 08:51:16 UTC
I'm claiming Galadriel from https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12620427/2/Enchantment-Passing-Through. She has description like this:
The Lady Galadriel was tall and poised, every inch of her screaming royalty. Her face was always calm and serene, a beautiful wall hiding the raging storm of power and emotion Laerorniel knew was surging underneath.
And telepathic lines like this:
The Dark Power call to me, too. It draws us both. I can feel it here, as do you. It is carried by a hobbit by the name of Frodo Baggins.
She bears very little resemblance to the Galadriel of the books... but she is actually pretty plausible as a version who made different life choices. Artanis Nerwen was very similar to her uncle Feanor; this version clearly stuck with that, rather than mellowing.

The fic writes it St. Merlin, but the original is St. Hermelin. The three first letters are removed, but you could also say that the 'r' was misplaced.
So, fitting Number 1 or not?
It counts by
on 2017-08-26 04:30:32 UTC
The general idea for that mini item was to have an edit distance of 3 or more from the correct spelling. I phrased it like that so I wouldn't have to explain what edit distance was. "St. Hermelin" to "St. Merlin" has that property, so it counts.
Clarification: Summaries can be taken from any fic updated within the time frame by
on 2017-08-25 03:03:17 UTC
For the items that relate to summaries, the fic just needs to have a chapter posted within the allowed time frame. The fic could have originally been published at any time.
